The record books were rewritten again this week in baseball. The main spotlight was on Barry Bond and his steroid induced home run record. Thank God it’s over. I for one am tired of seeing his name. Hank Aaron is still the king in my book. That may of course change as long as Alex Rodriguez is still playing. The youngest player ever to hit 500 will surely pass Bonds as long as he stays healthy.

The top feat of the week was Tom Glavine getting win 300. Tom is the finest example of a professional athlete in baseball. He is a real man that doesn’t need the spotlight to shine on him. He just manages to go to the mound and do his job season after season. I just heard in 20 season he has never been on the disabled list. That alone is a remarkable accomplishment in sports today. I am a Philadelphia Philles fan and have seen him pitch many times. You have to respect the man even if he is on the opposing team. The rest of the players should follow his example as a professional.

I just received a post card in the mail stating that the tax on a carton of cigarettes is going up again. Enough is enough!! Everytime the government has to raise money they target the cigarette smokers. I have a real issue with this practice. The smokers of the world are not the only people responsible for supporting the government and its citizens. I for one would like to see a huge tax put on alcohol. A smoker is doing more than his share in paying taxes. Because he has a habit that society has deemed harmful to everyone he will be forced to carry the burden of the rest of the people. Alcohol related accidents cause how many numerous deaths a year ? The loss of time at work due to hangovers & rehabs is more time than a smoker loses a year. Why then don’t we treat the alcohol users the same as we do smokers. Now a days a smoker is a second class citizen. The alcohol user should be the same.

The best thing a young person can do today is stay in school! The job market today is really difficult if you have no specialty to fall back on. The more education you get the greater your chances for success will be. I can speak from experience on this subject. I skated my way through high school with no direction. I have always had a very good work ethic but that doesn’t help if you have no education to list on your resume. Employers today will not give you a second look if you have nothing but work experience. Take it from someone who wishes he was still there. STAY IN SCHOOL!!!!!
